Author Yemi Adebiyi has
created a poignant symbolism of Nigeria’s torturous transition from a war-torn
land to one with a brighter future.
NIGERIA –
The small Nigerian town called Oloibiri is known historically as the location
of the first crude oil wells in Nigeria. But as important as the town is to the
history of the oiling industry, the town is also considered a sad reminder of
the oppressive colonial history of the country, not to mention the fact that
even today the inhabitants of that town live lives of hardship and hunger and
the level of environmental degradation is quite evident.
In the
“Pastor’s Prostitute,” author Yemi Adebiyi has written an eye-opening read that
tells the town’s sad history of having its people and natural resources
exploited and the many repercussions that still haunts it today.
This book
tells the sad story of a community that allowed foreign invasion of their trade
culture, and religion with insignificant number of dissent voice trying
unsuccessfully to counter the foreign and Christian influence. The story
follows the lives of two significant families in the town, The Edem and the
Rumuola families and their struggles with religious wars and control of the
town’s resources throughout the generations. This enlightening book also shows
the struggles of the inhabitants of the Niger Delta against the crude oil
companies for better compensation for the degradation of their lands and the
harsh working conditions inflicted upon them day in and day out. In truth this
is a story of neglect, of greed and acts of omissions that led to the emergence
of street miscreants and militant groups that have exposed the country to harsh
regimes where corruption and threat of death are commonplace.

The Author, Yemi Adebiyi, a poet,
salesman and public speaker, is also a marketing consultant in the Imaging
industry. The son of a farmer from Igbole Ekiti in Nigeria, he attended Notre
Dame College in Ekiti and Abeokuta Grammar School. He had a successful selling
career with General Oil Limited, Ess-ay Holdings Limited, Daily Best Industries
and Banksway International Limited in Nigeria. Yemi is currently the
