British Council Nigeria successful Live Music Show Workshop trains 11 upcoming sound engineers

From July 17^th to 23^rd 2014, British Council hosted the much travelled Mr. Sam Jones of Soundthread in Lagos.

Daily Newswatch reliably gathered that Mr. Jones was in the country to facilitate a Live Music Show Workshop organised by British Council to provide training opportunities for sound engineers.

According to the organiser, the workshop marked the second time British Council is working with Sam Jones.

Last year Sam Jones was on hand to facilitate a workshop for record producers at Ayo Bankole’s studio in Surulere, Lagos.

This year’s workshop was attended by 11 upcoming sound engineers from Lagos who spent three days learning the finer points of sound engineering from Sam Jones as well as getting hands on experience preparing and sound engineering for a major music show. The show the participants worked on was the monthly Afropolitan Vibes show at Freedom Park Lagos.

The showcase was well attended and the rain earlier on was no deterrence to people from all walks of life and nationalities that graced the occasion. The high point of the music show was the appearance of Afrikan Boy, a UK MC whose trip to Nigeria was facilitated by British Council and Legendary Fuji musician Salawa Abeni.

For the workshop participants, sound engineering for a major concert was a huge event, but it was the end of their learning process. The day after the music concert the workshop shifted base to Ayo Bankole’s studio in Surulere, where Sam Jones spent two days working them through music production, using the sound they had recorded from the Afropolitan Vibes showcase.

At the end of it all on Monday, June 23, the workshop participants were very elated by how much they had seen, done and learnt during the course of the workshop.

“I am very happy with the opportunity I got to work with Sam Jones and the British Council. This workshop is one of the greatest things that have happened to me since I started working as a sound engineer. I started three years ago, but this is the first time I am learning about mic placement and so many other elements of the job. I am very grateful and will encourage the British Council to do more of these types of workshops,” AdemolaAdenokan, one of the participants.

Sam Jones on his part was very happy with the outcome of the workshop and said that he always looks forwards to coming to work in Nigeria, most especially, because of the pool of talent that exists here
